Chef, 29, Dies from Rare Fungal Infection

Ian Pritchard's Death: A 29-year-old chef from Petoskey, Michigan, Ian Pritchard, passed away after contracting a rare fungal infection called blastomycosis.

Symptoms and Diagnosis: Ian was admitted to the hospital with flu-like symptoms, and doctors diagnosed him with blastomycosis 

Cause of Blastomycosis: Blastomycosis is caused by a fungus called blastomyces, found in moist soil and decomposing matter like wood and leaves. 

Severity of Infection: In Ian's case, the infection had "eaten large holes" in his lungs, likened to Swiss cheese

Treatment Challenges: Blastomycosis is typically treated with antifungal medication, but Ian's condition remained critical

Financial Support: Friends of the family initiated a GoFundMe page to assist with Ian's medical expenses and recovery

Ian's Condition: Despite being taken out of a medically induced coma, Ian remained heavily sedated and could only communicate non-verbally

Sad Outcome: Ian passed away just days before his 30th birthday, surrounded by his loved ones, as the blastomycosis infection had irreparably damaged
