Nebraska loses to Minnesota on last-second field goal

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Nebraska football lost a nail-biter to Minnesota on Thursday in the first game under coach Matt Rhule.

The Huskers outgained the Golden Gophers by more than 40 yards, but they couldn’t overcome four turnovers, losing 13-10. 

Minnesota scored first on 34-yard field goal by Dragan Kesich early in the second quarter. The Huskers’ next possession ended when quarterback Jeff Sims threw an interception.

But Minnesota was unable to take advantage, with Kesich missing a 54-yard field goal attempt. Nebraska then put together an 11-play, 58-yard drive.

But as the clocked ticked toward halftime, Sims was intercepted again on a pass to the end zone. Nebraska came out swinging in the second half.

Sims connected with Alex Bullock on the second play for a 34-yard touchdown pass, putting the Huskers ahead.

The teams then traded punts before Nebraska defensive back Omar Brown intercepted Minnesota QB Athan Kaliakmanis.

The Huskers capitalized, going 80 yards in 13 plays to score on a Tristan Alvano field goal. But Minnesota fought back, recovering a fumble by Nebraska running back Gabe Ervin Jr. with just under five minutes left.

Then another Sims interception gave Minnesota the ball back with one minute left in regulation. Kesich kicked a 47-yard field goal as the clock ran out to win the game for Minnesota.
